Currently we do not have any plans for future litters at Horham, and with the death of Fergus (Kailzie Captain Jack Horham) on Monday, 8 May 2023, almost 50 years of Golden Retrievers here at Horham came to an end.
It all began in 1974 when I bought my first bitch, Bryony (Temuir Bryony of Horham); although I bred from her, I wasn't in a position to keep a puppy at that time.
In 1976 Rosie (Bell Blonde of Horham) came to join us, and in 1981 I kept both puppies from her final litter - they were Boot (Sh Ch Horham Masterful Mistri) and Bottle (Horham Saucy Kittyhawk). It is from Bell Blonde of Horham that all Horhams since were descended - a total of 8 generations.
In 1986 my home-bred Boot achieved his Show Champion title when he was awarded his 3rd Challenge Certificate by the late Fred Triptree, and also went Best of Breed at Crufts at the same time. Boot's previous Challenge Certificates, also with Best in Show awards, had been won the previous year at Eastern Counties Golden Retriever Club and Midland Golden Retriever Club's Championship shows respectively. Boot also won Best Veteran Dog, aged 10, at the Northern Golden Retriever Association's Championship Show in 1991 under Shirley Crick.
Although the dogs have not been shown in recent years, I have now bred and/or owned a total of six Stud Book number winners (Horham Masterful Mistri, Horham Barraband, Horham Nemesia, Cattrysse Raindancer for Horham, Kailzie Captain Jack Horham and Horham Yes Sir I Can Boogie Around Overdene).
Until the end of 2013, I was a member of the Kennel Club's Assured Breeder Scheme, and although I withdrew from the ABS, when we had puppies, they continued to be raised with its requirements and standards in mind. Although we only bred the occasional litter, we always looked for permanent, loving homes for all our puppies but as mentioned above, we now have no further plans to breed Golden Retrievers at Horham.
