I owned my first Weimaraner in 1993, Connie. Connie did go on to get her Stud Book No for showing. Having had her hips scored at 8:7 which was average for the breed then. She was trained as a gun dog and was used in the beating line. Then came Claude, my "one in a million" dog. He worked in the beating line to, never false pointing and was a pleasure to own. His Hip Score was 8:8. Then there was Anna, Granddaughter of Connie and Claude. She to, worked in the beating line but loved to chase the deer, so it's all very exciting when she was off the lead -working! Her hips were 2:0. She also won her Stud Book No in the Show Ring.
My fourth weimaraner, Louie, Anna's Son.
He was a real character. His willingness to please was beyond measure. He had a well balanced take on Work and Play and as a Gundog happily worked as a team player.
He had a Hip Score of 3:3 (which is well below the breed average of 10). He was kept in check by his mum and she to, benefitted from his sense of fun although her idea of fair play was not quite his!
I now have Martha, Louie’s daughter, she’s an enthusiastic Gundog and I hope to be able to Field Trial her one day. She has a perfect Hip Score of: 0/0
During our training days and on shoot days… I cannot fault her keenness. Facing cover and following her nose, she’s a real pleasure to work. She’s bright and quick thinking and keeps me on my toes, is super company in the home environment and yet totally focussed on game finding and is a keen swimmer in large ponds, reservoirs and fast flowing rivers and enjoys surfing the waves at the seaside alike.
I have been a member of the Weimaraner Club of Great Britain since 1993.
I love this breed and their challenges they give you. They are head strong and sensitive at the same time and a careful balance has to be given to bring out the best in them.
