We are delighted that our Flat Coated Retriever Ivy, Liusaidh Moon River, gave birth to a litter of 8 puppies, sired by James, Ballyriver Back to Basics, on 10 May 2022. Both dogs are Kennel Club registered, have been health tested and are fabulous examples of the breed.
Ivy
Ivy is the youngest of our Flat Coats and together with her Mum, Maisie (DubhBruja Nikita), they are the most loved and treasured pets and are very much part of our family. Ivy is an incredibly friendly and loving girl, she has the waggiest of tails and is at her happiest when she is with the family – particularly on the occasions she is permitted on the sofa to cuddle beside one of us! She has lots of Flat Coat bounce and enthusiasm and adores being outdoors, going for a swim and greeting everyone she meets. While she loves exploring she is very attached to us and never ventures too far on a walk or lets us out of her sight. She was a joy to train and achieved her KC Obedience Bronze award by the time she was 1. While Covid restrictions meant we couldn’t carry on with the KC classes we continued to train her at home and she has always demonstrated great aptitude for training.
James
James, owned by Jennifer Flynn from the Candidacasa Kennels, is a kind natured, loving complete Mummies boy with an English type size construction. His mother Kate is a successful show champion in the ring with several CCs and RCCs and James is following in her paw steps with a good puppy/junior career in the show ring.
We consider that Ivy and James are a perfect match in terms of health and temperament and have produced beautiful even sized puppies who would make fantastic family pets with great potential for showing. Both have Almanza bred Flat Coats in their lines, the kennel which bred the 2022 Crufts Best in Show Winner Almanza Backseat Driver.
About Us
We live 7 miles north of Glasgow close to the start of the West Highland Way where we have lots of choice of beautiful country walks. I grew up with Irish Setters however when my brother got his first Flat Coat 20 years ago we knew exactly which breed we wanted when we decided to bring a dog into our family. I am actively involved in running the Scottish Flattie Walks & Friends Group and regularly organise walks close to us or in St Andrews where we often visit. There is nothing like seeing a gang of flatties meet up for a walk, they definitely recognise a breed mate and have the most fun splashing around in water together.
The puppies
The health of our puppies is paramount and the pairing of Ivy and James has a Mating Inbreeding Coefficient Prediction (COI) score of 4.9% which compares favourably to the Kennel Club Annual Breed Average COI of 5.3%. In the later stages of pregnancy, Ivy moved onto a high protein raw food diet with appropriate supplements to give the puppies the very best nutrition before they were born. Now that the puppies have arrived we are monitoring the whelping box around the clock for the first 21 days to ensure the safety of all the puppies and healthy feeding from Mum. All the puppies are steadily gaining wait and Ivy is a very attentive and loving mum to her brood.
The puppies are starting their life in a busy home environment and will be accustomed to lots of visitors, careful handling and household noise. In a few weeks we will also start very basic training commands as well as toilet training. Once weaned the puppies will have a wide range of foods suitable for their needs based on the principles of a raw food diet which both our girls have thrived on.
By the time they leave us around 4 July (though we can be flexible!) the puppies will be vet health checked, KC registered, micro-chipped, wormed and have one month’s pet insurance and an initial supply of food. We will also provide an extensive puppy pack, which will include a blanket with Mum’s smell, and a promise of a life time of support from us. We are in touch with all of the families from Maisie’s 2019 litter and love getting regular updates on their progress which we share on our page Liusaidh Flatcoated Retrievers.
This litter is very special to us and we will ensure that the puppies are going to suitable, loving forever homes. Flat Coats are very intelligent and highly trainable with a fun and playful nature. They make fabulous pets but do need regular exercise and stimulation and we always ensure that a Flat Coat is right for prospective owners. If you are interested, in the first instance please drop us an email with information about your family, home, expectations about having a flattie join your family and your dog owning history. We will then arrange to speak which gives us and you an opportunity to get lots more information about each other. We would welcome prospective owners to meet Mum and us when the puppies are around 4 weeks at which time we can provide advice on which puppy best suits your family.
