The wetterhoun breed originates in Friesland in the Netherlands where they are prized as both pets and working dogs. They excel as gundogs and in all aspects of scent work. They also make excellent companion dogs for active homes. The world population is around 1000 and the UK population has just increased to 19! In 2014 the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Stabij en Wetterhounen (NVSW: Netherlands Association for Stabyhouns and Wetterhouns) began an outcross programme to increase genetic diversity and effective popluation size.
Aafke had the first UK Wetterhoun litter in 2023.
This is the first Wetterhoun Outcross litter in the UK. The sire is Peike the Labrador Outcross Wetterhoun. The original labrador is Carpenny Scenario, a champion Black Labrador. Suitable puppies from this first litter were back-crossed with pure wetterhouns. Peike is the 3rd generation, with 12.5% Labrador genes. At the final backcross with Aafke, the puppies are effectively full Wetterhouns but with the health benefits of the remaining labrador genes and the lower Coefficient of Inbreeding.
Both Aafke and Peike have Embark test results, giving reassurance for the match at the level of DNA.
The Embark test results also show that Peike does not carry the "greedy gene" that is present in some labradors.

Puppies will be raised using Puppy Culture and Avidog protocols in a home environment.

Aafke's puppies from 2023 now live in a variety of homes across the UK. Some are working or farm dogs, others are companions. The Wetterhoun has a curly coat that does not require grooming or clipping and a delightful personality that is focussed on their human. They will work tirelessly, and enjoy a quiet rest.
In the UK, the Wetterhoun is supported by the UK Stabyhoun and Wetterhoun Association.
The puppies will be Embark tested, chipped, vaccinated, vet inspected, insured by Agria and registered with the Dutch Kennel Club. Please note there are no plans to seek registration of the breed with the UK Kennel Club.
