In 1994 I was introduced to my first Rhodesian Ridgeback and was instantly attracted to this stunningly powerful and agile breed. Eventually, in 2004 I was in a position to start the search for my first Ridgeback and in February 2005 I purchased Kobie (Nyassa Bibiana) from Sue Campbell the founder of Nyassa kennels.
Kobie instantly made herself at home and has been a joy to own ever since: it is certainly true that good things are worth the wait! I am in the fortunate position of being able to take my dogs to work with me each day and Kobie led the way for the others, working with me at many community events to help re-enforce the message of responsible dog ownership. She is always a hit at such events and her ridge causes much discussion often from the most unexpected or reluctant observers.
When researching the breed I was told that without doubt an owner of a Rhodesian Ridgeback must possess a great deal of understanding, common sense and most importantly a good sense of humour. There have been many instances when I have been reminded of these words of wisdom but probably the most cited example was when I tried to encourage Kobie to partake in fly-ball in the pouring rain. The truth of that statement really hit home, particularly the latter requirement so I smiled, thought a moment and took ourselves off to a covered area where she performed beautifully! Despite being a fair-weather dog, we attend local obedience classes, ring craft, agility and fly-ball all of which she enjoys immensely although her enthusiasm has been known to exceed her expertise.
