Dwarfism ( Disproportionate Dwarfism )

Overview

This disease is characterized by the abnormal growth, development, and remodeling of bones and cartilage. Disproportionate dwarfism involves relative length alterations of the limbs and changes in body proportions.

Characteristics and Symptoms

Affected dogs have a shorter height and body length. They show clinical signs like a disproportionally large head.

Affected puppies are not visibly distinguishable from their unaffected littermates at birth, but the differences become more obvious at the age between 3 to 5 weeks.

There will be shortening and deformaty of the humerus and femur and other long bones can be affected. Puppies will develop shorter 'bowed' limbs with a knobby appearance at the wrist joints. Affected individuals will have a wide based stance on the forelimbs. The hind limbs will also be shortened but not as much as the forelimbs.
