Cerebellar Hypoplasia

Overview

It has been found in the White Swiss Shepherd that there is a gene mutation in the RELN gene which causes the condition Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH). Dogs with this condition their cerebellum does not develop fully.

Characteristics and Symptoms

The Cerebellum has an important role in co-ordinating movement. Dogs with this condition will normally be wobbly, have uncoordinated movement and trouble walking, a wide legged stand and head tremors. Symptoms can be noticed as early as two weeks of age, with puppies failing to gain weight properly and will struggle to nurse, stand or walk straight.

This is a severe condition and normally results in euthanasia within the first month of life.

Prevention

DNA testing is available to identify clear, carrier and affected dogs. This is an Autosomal recessive condition, meaning the dog will need to carry two copies of the affected gene to be affected by this condition.
