Deafness and Vestibular Dysfunction (DINGS2)

Overview

Deafness and Vestibular Dysfunction (DINGS2) is a disorder that causes a loss of hearing in both ears and a variety a neurological problems, such as poor balance. Dogs affected with this disorder normally will shows signs within the first few weeks of life, some can have very mild symptoms where others can be severely affected, with symptoms progressively getting worse. Very young puppies may cry continuously without being able to be comforted, have trouble finding the teat to nurse or even be pushed out by their mother. Slightly older puppies may show signs as early as when they start to walk, including head bobbing, falling and un co-ordinated walking. There is no treatment that can cure this disorder, mildly affected dogs maybe able to live a relatively normal life but their welfare and supportive care needs have to be constantly accessed.

Characteristics and Symptoms

Signs of this disease show as the dog having balance and co-ordination issues often falling over. They can also have a head tilt and deafness in both ears and rapid movement of the eyes from side to side.

Prevention

DNA testing is available to identify clear, carrier and affected dogs
