Lethal Acrodermatitis
Overview
Lethal Acrodermatitis (LAD) is seen in Bull Terriers and Miniature Bull Terriers.
It is an autosomal recessive inherited condition. This means that a dog must inherit 2 copies of the mutation, one from each parent, to be clinically affected.
Characteristics and Symptomns
Puppies Affected LAD have characteristic skin lesions and poor growth.
The skin lesions consist of erythema and adherent scales. The lesions are found mainly on the feet, elbows, hocks and muzzle. Hyperkeratosis of the foot pads also occurs.
Dogs with LAD are also immunodeficient so frequently suffer from skin infections such as Malassezia or Candida.
Prognosis
Puppies suffering from this condition have a greatly reduced lifespan either due to infections, or due to euthanasia if the condition becomes very severe and painful.
The condition is almost always fatal.
Prevention
There is a DNA test available.
