Intervertebral Disc Disease

Overview

Ageing results in intervertebral disc degeneration due to water loss, increased fibrous tissue and mineralisation of discs.

Degeneration of a Dachshund's discs happens at a much younger age than in dogs with normal length legs.

Dachshund's are affected by Hansen Type 1 IVDD. In this condition herniation of the degenerative disc material occurs, which results in spinal cord compression.

Characteristics and Symptoms

The three main signs of IVDD are pain, incoordination and paralysis.

IVDD is commonly seen in Dachshunds aged 4-7 years old.

Treatment

Immediate veterinary treatment is required. Depending on the severity of the disease, the vet may recommended rest and medication or surgery.

Prevention

X-ray screening and back scoring can reduce the genetic risk of IVDD.
