Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome

Overview

CECS is a seizure like disorder which is thought to have an inherited predisposition, however, there are currently no DNA tests available to identify affected or carrier animals.

Characteristics and Symptoms

Affected animals present with shaking and cramping episodes that last from a few seconds to minutes. These episodes occur with a variable frequency from weeks to months apart but animals are clinically normally between.

The condition typically affects animals between 2 and 6 years old for the first episode. Severity of episodes tends to remain constant throughout life ie no progression of signs.

Clinical signs include:

  • Severe trembling, staggering, drunken appearance.
  • Muscle cramping that usually affects hind limbs and tail may curl up.
  • Exaggerated stretching.
  • Some dogs are unable to stand.
  • Borborygmi.
  • Lip smacking or licking.
  • Episodes last from a few seconds to hours.
  • No loss of consciousness.

Treatment

It is often difficult to receive a definitive diagnosis for this condition. Diagnosis is often achieved via exclusion of other neurological conditions.
