Shaking Puppy Syndrome is also known as Spongiform Leukoencephalomyelopathy (SLEM). It is a recessive inherited condition.
The onset of symptoms often coincides with when affected puppies begin to support their own weight and attempt to walk. Affected animals show severe tremors predominantly in the hind limbs creating a characteristic side-to-side shaking, also known as 'rump shaking'.
Most affected puppies die at a young age or are euthanised due to quality of life issues. With extensive supportive care, in some rare cases affected puppies can improve with time.
DNA testing can be used to identify clear, carrier and affected animals. Breeders should ensure at least one of the parents is unaffected before breeding.
