Spongy Degeneration with Cerebellar Ataxia (subtype 1)

Overview

Spongy Degeneration with Cerebellar Ataxia, subtype 1 (SDCA1) is an early onset form of severe neurodegenerative disease observed in the Belgian Malinois. It is a recessively inherited disease.

Characteristics and Symptoms

Affected dogs show a rapidly progressing ataxia starting at 5-8 weeks of age. The main symptoms are ataxia, wide based stance, loss of balance and incoordination.

The affected puppies are usually euthanised by 8-12 weeks of age.
