Congenital Hypothyroidism with Goiter in dogs is inherited as an autosomal recessive disease. The cause of this disease is a mutation in the Thyroid Peroxidase gene.
There are a number of metabolic abnormalities seen in affected puppies. Additional symptoms include delayed development, abnormal hair coat, small stature, difficulty nursing and other symptoms collectively referred to as cretinism.
Early diagnosis is essential for successful treatment. Affected dogs can be treated with thyroid hormone medication.
