The Lagotto Romagnolo storage disorder (LSD) is a inherited autosomal recessive genetic disorder. In affected dogs, storage materials accumulate in the cerebellar neurons and other cells leading to dysfunction and cell death.
The disease is characterised by incoordination and a staggering, uncoordinated gait.
Other symptoms such as involuntary eye movements (nystagmus) and behavioural changes, such as aggression and depression, have also been seen in affected dogs.
The onset of the disease varies from 4 months to 4 years. The condition is progressive and symptoms in affected animals worsens to a degree where they need to be euthanised.
DNA testing is available to identify clear, carrier and affected dogs.
