Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency type III (LAD III) is an inherited blood disorder affecting the German Shepherd breed. The disease is characterised by immunodeficiency which predisposes affected dogs to recurrent infections. In Affected dogs the leukocytes are unable to migrate to inflammation sites to take part in the process of pathogen phagocytosis. The disease is also characterised by increased number of leukocytes in the blood (know as leukocytosis). Affected dogs have abnormal platelet and white blood cell activity resulting in abnormal blood clotting and immune system function. Although affected dogs appear normal but they are at risk of life threatening bleeding after an injury or during a surgery. Vets are advised to be prepared for blood transfusion during surgical operations. Clinical signs include fever, increased mucosal haemorrhages, poor wound healing, periodontal disease, and lameness.
