History

The Russian Toy, also known as a Russkiy were formed in Russia in the 20th century. Its ancestors were bred as a companion breed for the Russian nobility as a rat catcher and a watchdog.

Characteristics

The Russian Toy is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. It is a bold, cheerful, extremely intelligent and affectionate loyal little dog. It has a big character in a small body and can be territorial and protective of its owner.

They are quick to train, recall and house train. However consistency in training is important because they will pick up bad habits just as quickly ! Whilst the Russian Toy is small, it does enjoy exercise more than some other similarly small sized breeds. Its size means it is ideal for urban environments.

The dog has a square and elegant appearance with long legs. The breed should measure between 20 and 28 cm at the withers and weigh up to 3 kg, however, individuals should never weigh less than 1 kg. The breed can come in smooth and longhaired varieties, but neither requires much grooming.

Health

It is recommended Russian Toy's are patella and eye tested prior to breeding
