Black And Tan English Toy Terrier
History
The Breed was developed in urban Victorian England from the smooth coated Old English Black and Tan Terrier. One of the oldest identifiable Terrier breeds and famed for its prowess as a ratting terrier in Victorian times, its ancestry can be traced back to the fifteen hundreds.
In the 1920's the larger Manchester Terrier and the Black and Tan Terrier (miniature) were recognised as two distinct breeds, with the name English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan) being adopted in 1962.
Characteristics
The oldest of the UK native Toy breeds, the English Toy Terrier (Black and Tan) can be described as a "Toy with Terrier characteristics". The breed has a true, plucky, Terrier temperament and although physically elegant and refined, it has a robust constitution. It is smooth coated with distinctive "Black & Tan" markings, and should be between 10-12" in height & 6-8lb in weight.
Owing to its Sporting Terrier ancestry, it is physically and mentally quick, and a free thinker! They make charming, cheeky, and loyal companions.
Excellent as housedogs, they like to socialise with people and other animals.
Health
The breed is currently classed as a "Vulnerable Native Breed" - this means that the breed has low registration figures and is currently at risk of becoming extinct.
The breed is generally genetically healthy, with luxating patella and deafness listed as the only genetic conditions the breed has been known to suffer from. However, some puppies can suffer from baldness, which they usually grow out of by the time they reach 6 months of age.
