Anatolian Shepherd Dog
History
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a flock-protecting dog with its origins tracing back to the ancient silk routes and would have been known then as Coban Kopegi which when translated means Shepherd's Dog. Over the many years it has been refined and are now registered as the Anatolian Shepherd Dog but it can be referred to as a Kangal. The name Kangal is a town in the Sivas area of Turkey where these dogs are most common.
Characteristics
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is large and powerfully built and is a formidable animal with a presence unlike many other breeds. Although they are normally, a very calm dog they can spring into action without any warning. When alert the tail is normally curled over reaching the dogs back. They are strong willed and a thinking dog and will try to outwit on occasion.
This breed is predominantly a grey fawn but the colour can vary to include red or white but whole colours are preferred. They are generally known for their distinctive black mask but they can also be seen without the mask. The coat is short, thick and with a dense undercoat. The Anatolian is easy maintenance. They require very little grooming although daily grooming will help to reduce hair shedding throughout the home.
Health
There are no known major health issues and it is a long lived breed, it would not be unusual to live for 12 years or above.
