How I run my kennels.
I am a Norfolk Council Licensed 5* registered dog breeder.
There are 123 mandatory conditions and at least 9 of 14 other conditions that have to be shown to be in effect to attain the 5 star registration with Norfolk Council.
All have to be fully vaccinated which to be honest, I don’t agree with as I believe all dogs are being over vaccinated. However, to achieve my 5 star license, I have to abide by this ruling.
As at the 4th of June 2025, I have 4 West Highland White Terrier girls that are of breeding age. 3 of the girls are CMO-1 so only ever use a stud dog that is clear.
All puppies in a litter are now individually tested for CMO- Some will be clear, some will be CMO-1 when one of the pair is CMO-1
I have 4 young WHW’s that range from 3 months old to one year old, all are clear of CMO.
These dogs will be my mums of the future when they reach maturity close to 2 years old.
I also have a boy WHW who will, when he reaches maturity, become my stud dog for the girls. He is clear of CMO and has a low Co-efficiency score. I waited three years for him. He was chosen and purchased for his breeding as using him with my girls in the future will make sure that all future progeny will be well below the average co-efficiency level of WHW’s.
All my dogs have a very friendly disposition. I would never breed from a dog that has a suspect temperament.
CMO Explanation
CMO Also known as Westie Jaw causes some bone growth in the jaw. CMO-0 dogs will not get it.
CMO-1 are very low risk. They very rarely or may have a very mild form which they tend grow out of at about a year old.
CMO -2 are more at risk but could still grow out of it. It is not advisable to breed with a CMO-2.
Advice is not to remove all CMO-1's as this could drastically reduce the gene pool and could result in some interbreeding (raising the level of the COI) and cause other health problems in the future.
CMO-1 is only really relevant if considering breeding in the future, in which case, a CMO-0 partner should be used.
COI Explanation
The average for Westies is 6.2%
In dog breeding, COI stands for Coefficient of Inbreeding, and it's a measurement of how closely related two breeding dogs are, both in the immediate and distant past.
It reflects the probability that a puppy will inherit the same two copies of a gene from an ancestor that appears on both sides of its pedigree. A higher COI indicates a greater likelihood of inherited genetic traits, potentially leading to increased health risks in later age.
