** Rally was given sleep on Saturday 26th November 2016. Such a sweet and sensitive girl without a bad bone in her body, she didn't deserve to go so young. Only two weeks before I had taken her to the vet as although to the casual observer she appeared fine, I just had a niggling feeling something wasn't right. Sadly investigative surgery found an inoperable grapefruit sized lymphatic mass between her large and small intestines. Goldens hide things so well, they never want to worry us. After surgery she enjoyed a happy 10 days, eating better than me, everything cooked to order and still enjoyed her walks. I hoped she would be with me longer, but sadly on the Friday evening I could see she was in pain and knew I had to do what has to be done, the hardest decision any of us have to make, but a decision taken only because we love them so much. Rally lived in the shadow of her illustrious older half sister Champion Pepper, not venturing out once she left the Junior classes as I was campaigning Pepper, and only reappeared in the Veteran classes last year, where she qualified for Crufts and thrilled me winning a strong Veteran Bitch class at Windsor. She was my number two picking up dog with Pepper and this year at long last I had hoped to achieve her Show Gundog Working Certificate, which those that knew her commented 'she could have done standing on her head'. Rally was so attentive and always asking 'what do you want me to do next?'. Lots of people said I should have done obedience with her and if I had had the time she would have excelled. She always greeted me with several toys stuffed in her mouth and would collect visitors' shoes in one mouthful. She excelled as a mum, producing a Res CC winner with her SGWC in her first litter. She got into difficulty during labour with her second litter and therefore was never mated again. With five puppies of her own she also reared five orphaned Boxer puppies and accepted them immediately. I was always finding Rally in the whelping box with puppies produced by the other girls, she never felt the others were keeping their children as spotless and warm as she could. Mother extraordinaire she would look after anything small and in need. Her daughter Rorie has herself produced two litters with a multi Championship Show winner in the first. Luckily I have Rally's young grand-daughter Mara from Rorie's second litter, who has reminded me of her granny since day one. RIP Rally, another taken too soon. There were so many waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge xxx. **
Rally is Pepper and my late Reiver's half sister, just as lively and highly intelligent. It didn't take Rally long to learn how to open doors! She is a fantastic retriever, probably the best I have had since Darwin, Tor and Rowan and soooooooo clever. It's a shame I now have to work more or less full-time again, as she would excel at any activity where a brain is required!
Rally was a very slow maturer and in the early days lacked coat. When she retired from Yearling classes age 2 years in May 2009, she had only attended ten shows in total. She was consistently placed in breed and Stakes classes at Championship Shows and has won Open Show firsts and Best AV Gundog Puppy awards, but she is not as precocious as her half sister. She would be more suited to doing obedience and agility than showing, as she is so very attentive.
The litter which produced Rally was long in the planning and was Teal's fourth and final liaison. Rally's temperament is to die for, she is extremely tactile and loving, bold and confident, sociable and friendly, clever and intelligent, fit and agile, everything a Golden should be - she reminds me very much of her dear mum Teal, who didn't have a bad bone in her body. She also reminds me all the time of her great granny Race - Tenfield Rambling Runaway, she looks very like her and has many of her mannerisms. Rally always seems to be underfoot, as she is always hovering around asking 'what can I do for you next, mum?'.
Rally produced a super litter of 4 boys and 4 girls in 2010. Her precocious daughter Tenfield Looks Like Trouble at Maddouse has her Junior Warrant and won a Reserve Challenge Certificate at the tender age of 13 months. Rally proved to be a most attentive mother, just like her mum before her, she not only looked after her own puppies but also Pepper's 10 puppies who were 6 days younger, tribute to her fantastic and caring nature.
A second litter two years later was a bit of a disaster, with 3 stillborn boys, but on a brighter note, this meant Rally was able to foster 5 orphaned Boxer puppies in addition to her own 5, who stayed with us for four weeks and was a very rewarding experience. Sadly though, at 5 and a half weeks old I noticed that one of her own girls (Rumba) couldn't open her mouth properly, which she still can't to this day. Not only did that mean that Rumba had to stay resulting in huge investigative vets bills, but it also meant I didn't dare take the risk of breeding from Rally again, even though Rumba's condition was almost certainly caused by an infection.
Two and a half years later Rally ventured back into the show ring after a 3 year gap. I was over the moon when she qualified for Crufts from her first Championship Show Veteran class, which also means she has now qualified to do her Show Gundog Working Certificate at long last!! Hopefully she'll have the opportunity to do this in the 2015-16 shooting season, proving that you are never too old. Three weeks later and Rally won her first ever Championship Show red card at Windsor Ch Show and the next day had her first ever go at dog agility - clever Rally, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!
