It is much sadness that we report that we had to say "Goodbye" to Rayne on Thursday, 11 February 2016 - just 6 weeks short of her 14th birthday.

Rayne was one of only two bitch puppies from her mother Kyriaki's 2nd litter by Mr P D Hambling's Horham Dancing Brave. An extremely rich dark gold puppy, chosen at only 5 days old to stay within the family, Rayne spent much of her early life "commuting" between Overdene and my late mother's home, but she returned permanently to Overdene, aged 22 months, as a result of my mother's unexpected death at the end of 2003.

Lack of space at home, and other circumstances made it impossible to keep a puppy from Rayne's 1st litter (by Mesdames Williams & Gough's Wilgem Star Designer), but both the bitches born in her 2nd litter (by Mrs & Mrs T Williams Chalksville Pipe Major at Trebettyn) stayed within the family – Dirnanean Over The Raynebow (Skye) with my youngest sister in Lancashire and initially at least, Dirnanean Ever Faithful (Eibhlís) at Overdene. Sadly, Eibhlís both wanted and needed more individual attention than she received with us, and she started her new life as "Ellie May" – a very spoilt only dog – in January 2008.

Whilst it was always planned that Rayne should have a final litter, when we chose a very handsome, equally rich gold dog with a wonderful temperament in early 2008, Rayne had other ideas and "missed"! However, we had good news later that year (on Boxing day 2008) when the hoped-for litter by a lovely dog from "old lines" (who holds the KC's Working Gundog Certificate and who at that time, regularly picked-up during the shooting season) arrived safely; just two boys, who now live within 5 miles of each other, their father and various other paternal relatives in Surrey. (See pictures on the litter page by clicking on the link below.)

With no bitch from Rayne to breed on from within our household, Rayne's chances of becoming a grandmother rested solely with one or both of her sons from her final litter - and she became a grandmother in January 2012 when her son Dirnanean's Shining Knight of Bramblyn gave one of my sister's Dirnanean bitches a lovely litter of 2 girls and 5 boys. Rayne's sons both have excellent low hip scores and clear eyes under the KC/BVA scheme. As is the case with all Overdene breeding bitches, Rayne was DNA profiled.

Rayne was placed 2nd in Veteran Bitch at the Windsor Championship Dog Show on 27 June 2013 and became our 1st ever Crufts Qualifier; she was exhibited there in March 2014. Rayne also qualified for Crufts 2015 at the age of almost 12½ by placing 3rd in Veteran Bitch at the National Gundog Association championship show in August 2014.

Rayne will be sadly missed, but she lives on at Overdene through her granddaughter, Sibeal, and her great granddaughter, Iris.
