Picking up - I won't get shot wearing this hat! photo by: T Allerton | We try to breed GSPs with biddable temperaments and natural working ability, so that those wishing to train them as gundogs should be able to succeed (given enough time, patience and know-how, of course!) |
On the moor photo by: S J Robson | Grouse counts take place in Spring, to establish how many pairs are in residence, then again in July/early August, to see how the broods have fared. This informs the 'keeper/landowner of the status of the grouse population and influences what amount of shooting will take place this season.
The weather can be unpredictable on the high moors, even in August! |
In training photo by: S J Robson | Working Tests keep the dogs tuned up during the summer period. By entering the occasional test, it makes sure that you keep up with the training - the stop whistle, directional signals, water work, etc.
It's all for a purpose, of course - the benefits of being able to handle a dog onto speedy, efficient retrieves when picking-up on a shoot, will create a good impression. There's no reason GSPs can't be as useful as a Labrador in that respect. |
At show photo by: T Allerton | We enjoy showing the dogs and try to support the local Open shows which put breed classes on, as well as exhibiting at Championship shows.
The photo is of Birkenwald Roni of Eshaldwell, who is pure German breeding. The most naturally talented GSP we've ever owned, she also has four Field Trial awards. Only lightly shown, but she was Best Puppy in Breed at her first show (pictured). |
ABOUT US: We are committed to maintaining the breed standard in the field as well as the show ring, therefore we only breed with stock which makes the grade as an all-round hunter/pointer/retriever.
All of our current adult dogs, ranging in age from 5 yrs to 10yrs, have awards in the field, both at Spring Pointing Tests and in Field Trials. Some have also won Reserve CCs in the show ring. Stevie awarded CCs for the first time in 2007 and is a KC non-panel Field Trial judge.
We have owned the breed for 24 years and are active members of both of the breed societies. We help to run the GSP Club's Yorkshire training group and get a good deal of satisfaction from helping others to train their dogs as shooting companions.
We can provide some one-to-one private HPR training on request. Tony is also available to offer shotgun coaching on clays, particularly aimed at those wishing to learn to shoot over their own dog. Please contact us for further details.
