We have had a life long interest in dogs and in the first place, like most people as pet owners. Labradors formed this basis, but in 1986, our interest changed direction to Newfoundlands.
Initially a lot of research took place before we decided to have our first newfie young lady in 1987.
We remember the breeders' words "You will not only have one!"
They were right and in 1991, a newfie boy joined the household. Together, they gave us great joy and passion for the breed.
Moving forward in 1993, we wanted to know even more about the breed, learning about pedigree history, breeding lines, showing and breed qualities. Later that year our 3rd newfie arrived, along with a desire to become more involved for future years with the breed.
Looking back through the history of the breed, it became clear to us that there was a type which took our heart; the old fashioned traditional Dutch and Danish type. Our pedigrees go back to "La Bellas" Kennel and the famous dog, "Dag".This type is a cobby, strong and heavy boned, substantial head without a loose mouth, excellent temperament, minimal health problems, and slow maturing variant of the breed. In order to achieve this, over the years we have worked very closely with Kennel Vom Burgseeli in the Netherlands to produce the dogs we have today. Over the years, we have had the very occasional well planned litters. Our current family of Newfoundlands are all part of the household totalling nine dogs with ages from 3 years to 11 years (including 3 dutch imports). One of our boys is presently in the Netherlands for a period of time. Currently we have three generations, including the current litter of puppies.
We are aware of the various possible health issues with the breed, and such issues as hip and elbow scoring and heart testing are undertaken as appropriate. We have various health records for our dogs and their relations. The age a number of the descendants has exceeded the breed average; Aiken and her mother, Freule lived until they were 13 years of age.
We offer support and advice to anyone who takes one of our puppies, once they are health checked, and we are there to help throughout the life of our Foxford descendants.
Our dogs are our life! Living near Sherwood Forest, they all enjoy walks with nature and meet lots of people. They live in the house and mix well with our cats and all visitors. Visits to the vet are infrequent and they are all fed with natural food. We have three old girls and one old boy who are still full of life.
Occasionally we attend Championship Dog Shows both in the UK and on the continent, and a number have in the past qualified and been placed at Crufts. Our dogs are not the american type which the majority around portray. We have a clear mission to try to improve the breed by doing our homework, making planned decisions and moving forward.
We do not believe we are experts, but we do believe we have super dogs in line with the breed standards. To say we love our dogs, is an under statement!
2009 saw the first step in diversifying our kennel when a dutch imported male Bernese Mountain Dog arrived at our home. We have considered for several years having this breed and we have now taken the bold step! The two breeds live well together and form an interesting contrast in so many ways. Who knows what the future may hold for the new breed addition to the Foxford kennel!
We may not be the "names in lights" but through our years of experience, always offer help, support and advice to anyone with an interest in Newfoundlands.
