Every Kennel Club recognised breed has a Standard.
The standard for the Bullmastiff describes everything about our breed from the tip of the nose to the tail. Buying Bullmastiffs need not be a lottery if you do a little research.
There are many quality, knowledgeable breeders, people who have studied our breed!
But there are also many so- called breeders who would be only too happy to supply you with a pup, telling you how wonderful it and its parents are when they do not have a clue themselves.
I see many a photo on this and other web sites of Bullmastiffs that are bred from or used at stud and the people who know our breed would not go anywhere near them!
Before enquiring about stud dogs or puppies get a breed standard and ask the breeder some questions. You can find the Standard here: http://www.bullmastiffassociation.co.uk/pages/breedstandard.htm
Where is the stop? Where is the hock? What is the occiput and where is it. Ask as many questions as you can. See as many dogs as you can. Go to dog shows and ask questions. It’s your money. It’s you who will pay the vet fees. It’s you who are inviting a dog that may weigh 130lb into your home.
The perfect Bullmastiff has yet to be born, but there are some quality animals out there. With just a little research you may own one.
If the breeder cannot answer you, if they will not take the time to talk to you then go somewhere else!
