Our interest in Bulldogs goes back to Clive’s great-aunt Kate who bred Bulldogs in Cheshire in the late 1880s before emigrating to South Africa in 1910. There is the story that she carried a Bulldog, which had a leg broken by a runaway horse and carriage, in her arms, until it could walk unaided. Some feat for a lady who was only 5ft 1in and her Bulldog which weighed some 58lbs! It was understood that from the day it could walk again the dog never left Kate's side until the day he died.
We began our first kennel in Cape Town South Africa in 1991 with the South African Kennel Club affix ‘Balleroy’ named after the village in Normandy where Alexis’ family lived before the French Revolution.
After a personal tragedy in Cape Town in 1993 our family moved back to England and settled in North Devon. We needed time to recover and waited until 2001 before it was possible for us to take up the responsibility of starting a Bulldog kennel once again.
In 2003 we were granted the affix ‘Bridlewood’ and purchased our foundation bitch Nellie from Lauwin kennels.
We have since used the widely experienced ‘Outdoors’ kennels and more recently 'Celticpride' and their stud Britishpride Goldcoin. The bloodlines we have used are of recognised quality and have managed to breed superb puppies.
Work restrictions have limited our time in the show ring, something we hope to remedy.
Our dogs are firstly our pets and spend much time in doors with us.
